Film music can make us laugh, make us cry, and completely alter the way we react to a scene or film as a whole. It also guides the pacing and structure of the film, creating a more immersive and cohesive experience for audiences.
This accessible, engaging talk by film music expert Dr Matt Lawson (Oxford Brookes University) will take audiences through a potted history of film music, from the very earliest silent films to 21st-century blockbusters, stopping off at important points on the way.
We will discover why films have music, how it has changed over time, and what happens when we change the music or remove it altogether. With facts, figures, anecdotes, humour, and a broad range of audio-visual examples, this talk takes the public into the magical world of film scores.

The Leys Festival is a vibrant community celebration bringing together people from Blackbird Leys, Greater Leys and across Oxford for a day of music, performance, creativity and family activities. Created with the local community at its heart, the festival provides a platform for local talent, organisations and residents while encouraging people to meet, take part and celebrate everything the Leys has to offer.

With live entertainment, arts and cultural activities, community groups, food and plenty for families to enjoy, the festival is about much more than a day out — it is about bringing people together, building connections and celebrating the creativity, diversity and spirit of the local community.

Mr G chats with Hugo Kerr and Deborah Fleming about the upcoming local screenings of the film.

The film is being screened across the nation and hopefully later on national television. There are two screenings locally, one in Eynsham on June 14th at Eynsham Village Hall at 7pm and a second screening at St Mary's Church in Wtiney on July 16th at 7pm. The event is free but you need to book beforehand, Eysnham can be booked via the eventbrite link and an eventbrite link will be created soon for the Witney event.
