The project has taken 7 years to complete and started as ‘just the one’ bed at the front of the house. It was soon to extend not only at the front but also into the rear/side garden. Before, the front and rear gardens were simply grass with a lot of rubble scattered around along the rear boundary. The left side section of the rear boundary was collapsing into the back field and had to be propped up in order to make the area safe and stop further erosion of the ground. Around 1.2 to 1.5m has therefore been ‘reclaimed’ and now accommodates a modest timber shed and 6x composting bins and water butts.
A solid feather board fence was originally in place dividing the garden in two, running along the access path. This was taken down and replaced with a picket fence. This has allowed a more fluid design of a small kitchen garden within the rear garden without hard separating fixtures.
Altogether, there are 16 beds (including raised beds) in the rear garden with narrow gravel paths running through each, a wooden section surrounding an old, but large Field Maple tree (left from a past hedgerow). The front garden has 4 beds including a large rose bed now occupying the old drive. Shrubs and a large rose are strategically planted providing a natural privacy screen without blocking the light or creating a fenced-off feel and appearance.
There are ample sitting areas in the rear garden providing tranquil places to relax.
